When Decentraland was first imagined, all sorts of impossible questions raised their ugly heads. Episode #7 of the Decentraland Spotlight series features a company not only dedicated to creating amazing games and beautiful looking casinos, but the company is also a natural problem solver, thinking up industry leading new tech to solve some of these problems. Satoshi or Vitalik? Both! Satoshi was the OG and took us from 0 to 1, but Vitalik has made the first step in our journey from 1 to n.
LAND or MANA? Content – long term content will prove to be more valuable than LAND and MANA combined. In my unpopular opinion, many people have grossly overpaid for most LAND since users are able to teleport to anywhere in the Metaverse via a simple URL click. The real long term value is in the content.
How did you find out about Decentraland?
baus: I found out about Decentraland during Spring 2017 from syndicate contacts.
What first attracted you to Decentraland?
baus: During the bull run of 2017, people believed that cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology were going to turn entire industries on their heads and change the world overnight. As the massive pullback in 2018 made clear, blockchain technology was nowhere near the bandwidth and UX necessary to make this revolution happen anytime soon. On top of scalability and UX issues, building real world consumer facing applications that use blockchain make pretty rash assumptions that all network participants will understand private key management, have coins in their Metamask, etc. This is simply not the case.
However, I realized that with Decentraland, you’re able to test out economic concepts in an entirely virtual world with a user base that is familiar with using Metamask, probably has some crypto in their wallets, and has the vested interest in the project succeeding (and therefore wants to promote something they enjoy in the Metaverse). That’s why I feel like Decentraland is a perfect testing ground for innovation in the space of blockchain games, payments, UX, and scalability of the crypto space as a whole. The models that prove to function in this test environment may ultimately be applicable to other platforms in the future, even in the real, non-virtual world eventually.
What do you consider to be the biggest selling points for Decentraland?
baus: The biggest selling points of Decentraland are the ability to socialize with other users and the crypto-economic incentives while playing games. Any successful project built in Decentraland needs to leverage social interactions and multiplayer dynamics because these aspects are going to be the biggest drivers in getting return users.
Additionally, the adjacent NFT-based digital economies around games in Decentraland enable developers to create incentive models where players are rewarded with real money for playing the games. This model can be leveraged to create a new form of fundraising as game developers are able to pre sell these assets to raise money from the community. I believe this model can be very powerful if constructed correctly.
What is Decentral Games?
baus: Decentral Games develops 3D metaverse games playable with cryptocurrency.
Why did you start Decentral Games?
baus: I started Decentral Games to solve the two main issues holding back crypto from achieving mass adoption – usability and scalability. And for the reasons I mentioned above, I thought Decentraland was the perfect platform to develop on due to its user demographic, digital interface, and thriving digital community.
What are you currently working on?
baus: At Decentral Games we’re working on getting our casinos ready for launch with slots, roulette, and blackjack – and then porting our games over to the Ethereum Mainnet to support real MANA and other cryptos once Matic Network launches their Alpha Mainnet. We’ve also developed a general purpose payments API that enables any new game we or a third party developer builds to integrate easily into our rapid transaction architecture and administrative backend.
What goals do you have for Decentral Games?
baus: My goal is for Decentral Games to deliver a user experience that is unprecedented by any Dapp before us by delivering a seamless user experience for metaverse-based multiplayer games playable with crypto.
What exciting things should we look out for from you in the coming months?
baus: We are launching 3 casinos within Decentraland – Serenity Island, Chateau Satoshi, and Flamingos (our joint project with the Vegas City district). We’ll also be rolling out several other games and adding additional coin support for our existing games soon. We’re planning on opening up our rapid payments API to the public shortly so that any game developer can leverage our architecture and administrative backend.
Where do you hope to see Decentral Games in 2 years time?
baus: In 2 years time, I would like Decentral Games to become a thought leader in the Dapp space by paving the way for other usable and scalable non-custodial decentralized applications. I hope that other blockchain based consumer applications will be able to take inspiration from our approach.
Will Decentraland become the lively metaverse we are all hoping for?
baus: That’s the billion ETH question! I think people will be pleasantly surprised with the level of content that the community has developed – I just hope the system will be able to support the large amount of users at public launch and deliver the performance that enables in-metaverse experiences that will have users coming back for more.
DCL Plazas would like to send a special thanks to baus, not only for taking the time to answer these questions, but also for playing a pivotal role in helping DCL Plazas build the kiosk design we imagined up (more news coming soon). Thanks baus & the team, see you at the roulette wheel.
