Nearing the end of this special 2 week Decentraland community Spotlight series, at #13 we have Amusement Park district, which is in the process of a re-brand into Wonderzone. R Dixon is the brains behind this district, a serial winner in previous GameJams and creator competitions, and a true asset to this community. The district is already littered with games and entertainment galore. Let R Dixon carry you through this forward thinking district…

How did you find out about Decentraland?
R Dixon: In early 2017 I was writing a science fiction novel that was set in a virtual 3d world with scarce land, built on the blockchain. I decided to look around and see if anyone was actually working on a project like that, and I found out about Decentraland. We’d had the same idea!
What first attracted you to Decentraland?
R Dixon: Of course I was intrigued by the decentralized metaverse concept. Plus I’d been doing blockchain development for a while, and I could tell that Ari, Esteban and the rest of the team were motivated and knew what they were talking about. I wanted to see how far they could go with the project, and try to help out, especially from a game development angle.
What do you consider to be the biggest selling points for Decentraland?
R Dixon: For the early adopters, land ownership and scarcity provide a really interesting dynamic that most virtual worlds can’t match. People are literally invested in this world, unlike most multiplayer VR worlds where the monthly subscription cost is the only hook. For visitors, I hope the wide variety of games, scenes, and gathering spots will be a big draw. There’s going to be a lot of territory to explore, and fascinating stuff to discover.
What is Amusement Park Wonderzone district?
R Dixon: We’ve collected a bunch of fun, game-like rides and attractions in one area. Most of these were originally built during Decentraland Game Jams and hackathons. They include:
- Koko Jones
- Haunted Spire
- After the Flood: Two Towers
- Gingerbread Breakdown
…and a crazy new racing game!
Why did you start Amusement Park Wonderzone?
R Dixon: Originally, we wanted to simulate a real-world amusement park, with ferris wheels and roller coasters and those cheap carnival games. We soon realized that would be boring for savvy cyberspace players. We started rethinking what an amusement park could be in a virtual world, and decided the rides would have to actually be games themselves.
What are you currently working on?
R Dixon: We’re building an unusual kind of racing game that will debut at the Decentraland launch date. We’re also creating collectible WonderZone NFTs that players can win when they do great at the games.
What goals do you have for Amusement Park Wonderzone?
R Dixon: I want WonderZone to be a place people can visit over and over again, to replay games or try out new ones — and watch their friends play too. It’s one of the few all-ages district,s so we hope to see a lot of kids playing too.
What exciting things should we look out for from you in the coming months?
R Dixon: We’ll be adding some new games and upgrading some of the current ones. We also plan to run monthly events with rare NFT prizes.
Where do you hope to see Amusement Park Wonderzone in 2 years time?
R Dixon: I hope it’s a thriving area, with new games arriving every month or two, and plenty of other stuff to do. As the Decentraland technology platform develops we will keep pushing the envelope and coming up with new game concepts that couldn’t exist anywhere else.
Will Decentraland become the lively metaverse we are all hoping for?
R Dixon: Yes, but it will differ a lot from Second Life and others that have come before. I think the decentralized, open nature of this metaverse will attract a unique and quirky group of cyberspace pioneers, and that will be Decentraland’s greatest strength.
DCL Plazas would like to say a huge thank you to R Dixon for contributing so much to this community, and hope to join you one day throwing coconuts at vicious monkeys in an MMRPG version of Koko Jones.
