This is the last one! If you’ve made it this far in this Decentraland community Spotlight series, congratulations! Hopefully you now have a good feel for some of the great projects that are being created by the community.
Thinking outside the box, there are projects which offer various other options to make a passive income from investing in Decentraland, and Vegas City is one of the leaders in this space. Read below as James explains more, and thanks for following us through this series…
Name of Project: Vegas City
Website / Social: https://www.vegascity.org

Project Lead: James Ashton
Month /Year Project Started: January 2018
Favourite Successful Entrepreneur? I do like Elon Musk – pushes the envelope. Marco Arment is a small scale entrepreneur and I enjoy his podcast and his views on Technology.
Satoshi or Vitalik? Well Satoshi had the vision. But my background is in development and Vitalik’s vision and the smart contract based ecosystem is just amazing. That is what got me hooked back into crypto.
LAND or MANA? Well has to be LAND. LAND is a token but it is represents ownership of part of a content delivery platform. If you step back from the fact you build 3d content on LAND, and look at the main software components of DCL – it is amazing. It is a design pattern that could be used for countless solutions in all areas of tech delivery. It’s just Decentraland is a 3D world. But I see potential for this way of arranging things in other areas of tech.
How did you find out about Decentraland?
J Ashton: I heard about it through crypto channels before the ICO.
What first attracted you to Decentraland?
J Ashton: It seemed like it could be a melting pot of technology, finance and creativity. It just stood out like a shining beacon and I soon became obsessed.
What do you consider to be the biggest selling points for Decentraland?
J Ashton: Decentralized ownership leading to a melting pot of ideas and innovation. It is a web based delivery platform which is totally managed, deploying to LAND just requires holding the token.
What is Vegas City?
J Ashton: First and foremost, Vegas City District is a land trust. It is the custodian of the LAND asset and it’s duty is to earn it’s shareholders a return from it’s use of that LAND.
Why did you start Vegas City?
J Ashton: I was part of the founding team and I was from a background in the gaming industry having worked on sites such as Bovada. I wanted to deliver poker. Got involved in the project and the rest is history!
What are you currently working on?
J Ashton: Many things! But in terms of where I am most hands on – I am currently working on the Flamingos casino and we have a game in the pipeline called Landroids which I am excited about and I will leave the to the readers imaginations to guess what that is all about.
What goals do you have for Vegas City?
J Ashton: To provide a sale and responsible gaming area which protects users interests instead of seeing them as a resource to be squeezed. It would make gaming more accessible and would work with a partner like Decentral games to do the heavy lifting…..
What exciting things should we look out for from you in the coming months?
J Ashton: We have much content to deploy, some of which will be ready for launch. We have new games in the pipeline. We have a new NFT developed, deployed and ready to Mint – we just need to choose where we use it.
We are also working on a super exciting partnership which brings some very cutting edge tech to Vegas City. More on that v soon.
Where do you hope to see Vegas City in 2 years time?
J Ashton: Well populated with quality content that is earning ‘Flamingos’ leaseholders a solid return on their investment, and an area which entertains and captivates and has people wanting to come and hang out and meet their friends.
Will Decentraland become the lively metaverse we are all hoping for?
J Ashton: I think it can. However I think there are crucial parts to get right – pivotal is the best social experience – that has to be all encompassing and seamless for all users. I believe they will get there – but scaling out a realtime network where all users can access all other users, while keeping shared state of the world across all clients – that is tough. But I know it can be done. In FX trading, low latency, real time systems are the backbone of what we do – I see that many of the challenges are analogous. So I know that it can be done.
DCL Plazas would like to thank both the Vegas City team, as well as you, the reader, for following us through this 2 week series. The hope is that you have learnt more about how deep the Decentraland community goes, the diversity that exists, and the potential that lays ahead. Long live this new decentralized metaverse.
